Norwalk Family Law Attorney

Divorce Does Not Have to be Painful or Expensive

Protecting Our Clients and Their Children

As a family law attorney, Mark Kratter work with individuals going through some of the most risky and stressful processes in life. These include divorce, custody, paternity, adoption, post-decree modifications of support, and other issues that affect our clients' economic status and the welfare of their children. At our firm we realize that these clients are intimidated by the changes they face and of the expenses involved in divorce. We will help them navigate family court with the least pain and expense possible.

The law firm of Mark M. Kratter, LLC, in Norwalk, Connecticut, serves clients in divorce and family matters throughout Fairfield County, including the communities of Norwalk, Stamford, Greenwich, Westport, Redding, Wilton, Ridgefield, Darien, Weston, Fairfield, Danbury, Stratford, Monroe, Newtown, Bethel, Danbury, New Canaan, Easton and Bridgeport.

As a divorced parent who has custody of his young daughter, Mark Kratter is sensitive to the needs of parents and children involved in family law matters. His training as an electrical engineer has provided him with the analytical skills and respect for detailed preparation that is critical to successfully negotiate favorable agreements or litigating for favorable court orders.

Our attorneys are prepared to help with a full range of family law issues, including:

  • Divorce/dissolution of marriage: We will protect your rights during this complicated legal, financial, and emotional process. It is important when making decisions about divorce that you consult with an attorney who understands the tax consequences of every element of the final settlement.
  • Child custody: Our lawyers will help you work out an arrangement for joint or sole custody that is in the best interests of your child, including provisions for the child's primary residence and the arrangement for major decisions (legal custody).
  • Visitation/parenting time: The Court assumes it is important for a child to maintain a strong relationship with both parents. We will defend your parental rights. Through creative arrangements our lawyers help our clients who are unmarried or divorced noncustodial parents maximize the quality and length of visits with their children.
  • Child support: Connecticut has official Child Support Guidelines which consider the incomes and responsibilities of both parents, along with the needs of the child. However, the Court will depart from these guidelines when they would result in an unfair or inadequate payment schedule.
  • Alimony: Spousal support is sometimes granted in the form of temporary alimony during the process of divorce or while a homemaker acquires the educational skills to make a suitable income. Long-term alimony is less common and relies on a number of factors.
  • Equitable division of marital assets and debt: The Court will try to divide marital assets fairly. This does not automatically mean an equal division of property, however. The assets that we will examine with you include your home, retirement accounts, personal property, and cash accounts. We will then work to negotiate a favorable agreement in the most efficient way.
  • Domestic violence/restraining orders: If you or your children are threatened by domestic violence, or if you suspect you may be wrongly accused of violence, it is important to take immediate action to protect yourself and your children. Contact a lawyer for advice.
  • Modification of decree: If circumstances have changed substantially since your divorce or custody agreement was ordered, our attorneys will help you apply for a modification of custody, visitation, and support.
  • Paternity: Helping unmarried parents establish their rights.
  • Adoption: Assisting stepparents and other parents.
  • Guardianships: Helping families care for vulnerable family members.
