Norwalk, Connecticut, DUI LawyerDrunk driving charges are seriousOur DUI lawyer gives them serious attentionIf you have been arrested for DUI, you may think there is little benefit to hiring an attorney. There are effective defenses to charges of drunk driving, including challenges to evidence and police procedure. Lawyer Mark Kratter, as your attorney, will see that all available defenses are used on your behalf. If you are convicted or plead guilty, he will ensure that your driving privileges are reinstated as soon as possible, he will work to keep you out of jail, and, if possible, will get the charges dismissed altogether after you complete a special pre-trial program. If you would like to speak with Mark about Connecticut DUI law, or if you have another question, contact our Norwalk office and make arrangements for a free phone consultation. What should I do if stopped for DUI/drunk driving? If you are stopped by the police and suspected of drunk driving, you will be asked to take a chemical test, such as a blood test or a breathalizer test, to determine your blood alcohol level. In Connecticut, if you refuse to submit to the test as requested by the police officer, you may be prosecuted for drunk driving and your license may be suspended for a period of six months. While it is important that you do not make any incriminating statements to the police (do not talk about any drinks you had) when you are suspected of drunk driving, you should always act in a courteous and respectful manner to the investigating police officer. The police officer's testimony could have a direct bearing on your sentencing in a drunk driving case at a later time. What are the penalties for drinking and driving?Drunk driving is considered a serious offense in Connecticut. A convicted first-time DUI offender is ordered to pay a fine and may be sentenced to a short jail term. A suspension of his or her drivers license will usually occur as well. There are certain "programs" available to first-time offenders, which allow the defendant's punishment to be decreased under certain circumstances. As your legal counsel our DUI lawyers not only will defend you against charges, but will help you develop a plan to avoid future legal problems. In addition to DUI our attorneys provide criminal defense against a full range of charges. For more information about Connecticut's criminal trial process, see The Criminal Law Process.
