Connecticut Felony Crime Defense Attorney Will Fight For Your Rights

Felonies in Connecticut are serious crimes that are punishable by state prison terms of one year or more. Felonies may be capital felonies; Class A, B, C, or D felonies; or they may be unclassified. If a felony is unclassified, the sentence will be provided in the specific Connecticut criminal statute, and different sentencing laws apply for crimes committed in the state before July 1, 1981.

If charged with a felony, it's imperative you contact criminal defense attorney Mark Kratter, LLC for aggressive and experienced representation in the Norwalk, Connecticut area.

Capital Felonies

Until 2012, Connecticut punished capital felonies (murder with special circumstances) by death or life without the possibility of parole, but in April 2012, the state abolished the death penalty. Today, those convicted of murder with special circumstances in Connecticut are sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. An example of a capital felony is the murder of a police officer.

Class A Felonies

Not including capital felonies, class A felonies are the most serious crimes committed in Connecticut. A class A felony is punishable by 10-50 years or 25 years to life in prison and a fine of up to $20,000. An example of a class A felony is murder.

Class B Felonies

A class B felony conviction is punishable by a prison term of one to 40 years and a fine of up to $15,000. An example of a class B felony is manslaughter in the first degree.

Class C Felonies

Class C felonies are punishable by one to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000. An example of a class C felony is second-degree murder.

Class D Felonies

The least serious type of felony in Connecticut is a class D felony, which is punishable by a prison term of one to five years and a fine of up to $5000. An example of a class D felony is assault in the second degree.
