Selling drugs is an extremely serious offense in Connecticut, and the penalties vary according to the offense and the specific situation.
Drug Sale or Intent to Sell
The cultivation, delivery, or sale of marijuana of one kilogram or less carries a penalty of up to seven years in prison, a $25,000 fine, or both for a first offense. The penalty for the sale of over one kg of marijuana is a minimum of five up to 20 years in prison.
The sale of narcotics or hallucinogens other than marijuana carries the following penalties under Connecticut law:
- First offense – up to 15 years in prison, a $50,000 fine, or both
- Second offense – up to 30 years in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both
- Subsequent offenses – up to 30 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, or both
- Alternative sentence – up to a three-year indeterminate sentence with conditional release
The sale of any other illegal drug (other than marijuana) carries the following penalties:
- First offense – up to seven years in prison, a $25,000 fine, or both
- Subsequent offenses – up to 15 years in prison, a $100,000 fine, or both
- Alternative sentence – up to a three -ear indeterminate sentence with conditional release
The sale of at least one ounce of heroin, cocaine, or methadone, five milligrams of LSD, or .5 grams of crack cocaine by a non drug-dependent person carries a mandatory minimum five up to 20 years in prison with a possible maximum of life imprisonment.
