If you are stopped on suspicion of DUI in Connecticut, the officer should give you instructions and a demonstration prior to your being asked to complete the Standard Field Sobriety Tests (SFST). The SFST are very important and are related to whether or not probable cause exists to arrest you.
The three field sobriety tests commonly used in Connecticut include:
- The Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test, during which the officer holds up a pen or finger and observes the driver's ability to track the object as it moves from the center of the driver's vision to its edges, looking for the point where the eyes lose focus on the object.
- The Walk and Turn test, which requires the driver to walk in a straight line, taking nine steps walking heel to toe, turning around on one foot, and then walking heel to toe back to the starting position. If they are unable to stay on the line or remain balanced, they may be considered intoxicated.
- The Stand on One Leg test, which requires the driver to stand with one leg raised in the air for 30 seconds while counting out loud. If the driver cannot keep their leg off the ground or cannot remain still, it is a sign that they are impaired.
